Summertime is knitting choice time. Warm cozies aren’t needed. Friends aren’t making requests. It’s time to knit what you want, for whatever reason you want.

I find my reason in my stash. I pore over the thumbnails on Ravelry, then paw through the cubes in my yarn wall. I get inspired by color and texture. Then I go back to Ravelry to see what others have done with this colorway; what stitch patterns show it best, on what projects?

I didn’t necessarily set out to knit a simple stockinette slouch hat when I went trawling for a new project. But the deep reds of this skein drew me in. And a Raveler’s Sockhead hat using this exact yarn and color was so radiant and compelling that I couldn’t resist being a copycat. Simple, sure. But you can’t deny perfection.

Every time I pulled out this one skein, this minimalist circle of stockinette, I felt stress leaving my body. And I knit this at a time of intense stress. It restored me while waiting in the car to pick up a child, while enjoying the courtyard at church on a pleasant morning, while reading, while taking an outdoor lunch break, while listening to presentations. Round and round. It’s just a hat. But the experience was exactly what I wanted.
